The sun smiled over Camp Hoffman on Sunday, June 7th as nearly 1000 Girl Scouts, their families and community members came together to celebrate the environment. Parade of Nations Appreciation Table: Girl Scouts took a few mintues to write a note of thanks to their leaders and volunteers for a great troop year! RI Resource Recovery's Max Man wandered about the meadow sharing tips on recycling and making new friends! An 11' tall replica of the Rose Island Lighthouse provided a working demonstration of water conservation techniques. Cumberland shared information about the importance of honey bees and the critical role of pollination. Did you know that one of every three bites you take is related to honey bee pollination? Girl Scouts from East Providence explained how China is protecting the endangered Panda Bears. Of course, no event would be complete without: a little shopping, a little eating, a little dancing, and a special friend!

On Sunday, May 31, at Save the Bay in Providence, 52 girls from Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Inc. were recognized for achieving their Girl Scout Gold Award. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. A national award, with national standards, it represents girls' time, leadershiph, creativity and effort contributed to make their community better. Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch and Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts were on hand to offer their congratulations. Read about the remarkable Gold Award projects accomplished by this amazing group of girls. April Arruda of Bristol received a $15,000 Bryant University Gold Award Achievement Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year!! The award is renewable for four years provided April maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average as a full time student. Wow!! Mary Arnold of Johnston and Brittany Sederback of Chepachet shared the Susan M. Cicchini Gold Award Scholarship. Susan was a girl member, Girl Scout volunteer troop leader, camping consultant, trainer, and board member who then became the Director of Program and Training at GSRI. When Susan left our council she wanted gifts in her honor to establish a scholarship which is given annually to a Gold Award recipient. Congratulations to all our girls for their outstanding achievements!
