Programs - Community Service Programs Thank you for your interest in GSRI's community service programs! SCROLL DOWN NOW TO LEARN ABOUT THE 2008 PROJECT UNDERCOVER SEASON IN APRIL! Throughout the year, Girl Scouts all over our region are engaged in a wide range of community service activities - contributing to their communities as individuals, and as part of a troop. Girl Scouts are encouraged to connect with one another, and to reach out to those in need. At a council-wide level, GSRI is proud to share information about two very successful community service projects that involve all Girl Scouts. One is called "The Cookie Sale Service Project" and takes place from January until the end of March, and the other is "Project Undercover" which takes place throughout the month of April. 2008 Cookie Sale Service Project: Shake-a-Leg, Inc. Shake-a-Leg, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization founded in 1982 in Newport, Rhode Island. Their mission is to provide traditional and complementary therapeutic services for individuals who have experienced spinal cord injury and related central nervous system dysfunction. Shake-a-Leg operates three major programs for Adults, Young Adults and teens, and an Adaptive Sailing recreational and instructional program and camps for children and adolescents with disabilities. These programs give participants the opportunity to expand their physical capabilities and explore and maximize their human potential. For more information, go to www.shakealeg.org. For additional information on Girl Scout cookie sale community service programs, contact Ginger Lallo at glallo@gsri.org or call her at 401-331-4500 ext. 1310. Project Undercover: ***14th Annual Project Undercover is here!!!***
This project is GSRI's annual council service project held in collaboration with the Rhode Island Donation Exchange Program (RIDEP). Each year in April, troops throughout the council collect underwear, socks and diapers for the 40,000 children in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts who live in poverty or encounter emergency situations. RIDEP arranges distribution through area social service agencies. Now heading into our 14th year, over 2,000,000 items have been collected and distributed to these children. We will be kicking off the Project Undercover season at an awesome event on Saturday, March 29th at 9:30am at the Roger Williams Park Zoo! Entry: $6 plus a donation of socks, underwear and/or diapers for entrance. We will have a fun scavenger hunt and there will be a Mr. Potato Head to meet and the 3 Cardi Brothers Cartoon Characters will be there to greet everyone! This event is open to the public. JOIN US: APRIL 20th!!! Rain or shine...the "SOX FOR SOX" game is open to the public and to enter this fun game, all you'll need is a package of socks, underwear or diapers - one package per person! If you are a Girl Scout and want to be a part of the opening ceremony, arrive by 12:15pm!! Special thanks to Patrice Wood of NBC10 and to Jametta Alston, RI Child Advocate, for donating their time, once again, as Honorary Co-Chairs for Project Undercover in 2008...we appreciate your leadership! Girl Scouts will collect young children’s new undergarments from April 1-30. You can help by making getting your workplace or organization involved to support your daughter’s troop. Local 2008 sponsors include: Cardis Furniture, Hasbro, Pawtucket Red Sox, and NBC10 and we will be supported by the RI National Guard.
