Training - Course Descriptions/Requirements

Basic Leadership Training

Purpose: To develop basic competencies needed to be a Girl Scout Leader; age-level program design; indoor/outdoor activities; group management; leadership skills; safety awareness; council policies and procedures; and valuing and promoting diversity. 

Prerequisite

  • Completion of Volunteer Application
  • Orientation to Girl Scouting in the local community given by your Service Team or staff Field Director
  • Completion of Pre-Training Worksheet.  Please complete this outline and bring to the first class.

Attendance: Two sessions and Outdoor Day, or all-day session and Outdoor Day. Attendance at all sessions is required.

Bring: GSRI Leader Manual and appropriate age-level books if you have them. Books will be available for sale. For the Outdoor Day or all-day sessions, bring a sack lunch.


Troop Camp Training
Purpose: To provide adults with the basic knowledge, skills, planning, methods and techniques to enable troops to have a successful troop camp experience.

Prerequisite for ALL Troop Camp Training:

  • Completed basic Leadership Outdoor Day.
  • Successful completion of TROOP CAMP TRAINING will qualify an adult to take a troop cabin and/or platform tent camping. Troop Camp courses consist of 6 hours of classroom sessions and Saturday, 8:00 AM to Sunday, 3:00 PM of hands-on training.
  • Attendance at ALL sessions of each course is MANDATORY for completion.


Age Level Change
Purpose: To introduce the various requirements associated with thedifferent age levels.  Participants will go over requirements, program and troop/group governance

Prerequisite: Basic Leadership Training

Bring: GSRI Leader Manual and appropriate age-level books if you have them. Books will be available for sale.

GSRI is recruiting new Trainers to help expand the Girl Scout program and meet the needs of training new leaders.

"The role of a GSRI trainer in Girl Scouting is to design and facilitate training so that every learning event successfully meets the varying needs of each adult and results in changes in thinking, behavior, or values that benefit the Girl Scout movement."

How to Register for Training 
Deadline for registration is two calendar weeks prior to the session or as noted. Registrations after the deadline will be accepted ONLY on a space available basis.

  • Minimum course size is 10, unless otherwise noted. If minimum is not reached by registration deadline, course will be canceled. You will be notified by telephone. Every effort will be made to place registrants in another course. Register early to avoid disappointment.
  • Confirmations with location and directions will be mailed once registration has been processed.
  • Refunds for courses requiring a fee will be made only with two weeks notice of cancellation. Registrations received less than two weeks before an event are not eligible for refunds.
  • Girls 11-17 who have completed the GSUSA Program Aide core training or Leader-in-Training l and would like to attend a workshop to become proficient in a particular topic may do so.
  • Cancellations Due to Weather: You will be notified by telephone if a course is canceled or a message may be left on the council office's voicemail system. Listen to WPRO (630 AM) or WPMZ (1110 AM) for weather cancellations.
  • Child care: Please do not bring children to training sessions unless childcare arrangements are specifically mentioned for that course. We encourage you to ask other parents to baby-sit as a service to the troop.
